Project mapping utopia
The street name project on which I worked was an reaction on a lecture of Susanne Kratochwil, a city planner whom was asked to do research to create new street names for the city. She said that our street name and ad res is a part of our identity as we have to write it down many times and is part of our important official 'personal' information.
I understood what she meant but at the same time realised that the name of the street I live in or lived in before don't mean much to me.
In the context of the idea of an Utopian city I started to collect and create very subjective street names, based on life motto's coming from people working (temporarily) in the area. Street names as statements, saying something about a the quality of life, with which you could agree or not. For example the 'Dont take the easy road', 'Appreciate the imperfection street' or 'You are always welcome street' As well we made signposts to specific (Utopian) areas as:
CIVIL COURAGE --> HIGHWAY TO LOVE --> CINEMA OF DAYDREAMS-->
For me this project was related to the question we talked about how to create a desired identity to an area. And to the dialogue about our desires for our surrounding, the surroundings which we live in and take part of. On which values do we design our surroundings? And what would be important for us to actually be there? We arrived at just the start of a conversation and a sketch of the map.
Maybe as they would say (in the cinema of daydreams): To be continued....
