Innovation hub for research & collaboration
Seestadt is more than just a district – it is a laboratory for the future. Here, businesses, academia and urban development come together to work on innovations for a sustainable, liveable way of life.
Where research shapes the city
In Seestadt, urban development is being reimagined: cooperation and research are central pillars of the location. Whether energy, mobility, or digitalization – solutions are developed here and tested directly in everyday life. Research, businesses, and residents work hand in hand, making Seestadt a unique testbed for smart urban development.
- Testbed for the future
- On-site innovation
- Local expertise
The City of Vienna was awarded the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize, among others, for its livable and sustainable urban development, in which Seestadt received special mention.
Urban Lab of Smart City Wien
Seestadt is a flagship project of Smart City Wien. A place where intelligent ideas, concepts, and technologies are combined and tested under real conditions. What is created here becomes tangible in everyday life – and provides insights that have an impact far beyond Vienna.
Urban Lab – a vibrant testbed
Climate change and the increasing scarcity of resources present major challenges for cities worldwide. As a growing metropolis, Vienna is tackling these challenges, as Austria’s capital ranks among the world’s most successful cities in terms of quality of life, infrastructure, and innovation. This status must be secured.
Seestadt does not see urban development as a purely technical task. It relies on the close involvement of residents, who use, evaluate, and help shape innovations on site. Only through this interaction does the city truly become “smart” – because it is oriented towards people’s needs.
Smart City is not a single measure, but a holistic approach that covers all areas of urban life: energy supply, mobility, urban development, leisure, and work. In Seestadt, these dimensions interlock, making the district a laboratory for the future.
ASCR – The city’s energy future starts here
Aspern Smart City Research (ASCR) is one of Europe’s largest and most innovative research projects focused on the urban energy future. Against the backdrop of climate change, finite resources, and increasing urbanization, ASCR develops and researches forward-looking solutions in the domains of grid infrastructure, buildings, and digitalization. Together with strong partners from research and business, the team works under real-life conditions and with real data to develop and integrate new technologies, making the energy supply of modern cities more efficient and sustainable.
ASCR develops and researches pioneering solutions in the areas of Smart Building, Smart Grid, Smart User, and Smart ICT – directly in practice, in several real testbeds such as the Seestadt low-voltage grid or Technology Center 2.
