Lake + Parks
In Seestadt, nature and relaxation are just a few steps away. Around half of the district is reserved for open space. Even today, 19.5 hectares are dedicated solely to the lake and the first five parks. These intelligently planned open spaces create a balanced life – right in the city and yet surrounded by greenery. The lake is the heart of Seestadt and makes the unique interplay of urban life and nature tangible.
The Score of Public Space
The public space in Seestadt is designed as a coordinated overall concept – the Score of Public Space by Gehl Architects serves as the design foundation. Public spaces, parks, and promenades act like different strings of a musical instrument – they create orientation, rhythm, and quality in everyday urban life.
The green string connects the parks and open spaces of Seestadt into a continuous, vibrant ribbon of relaxation.

The Lake – Heart of Seestadt
The heart of Seestadt is the approximately 50,000 m² lake, surrounded by an almost equally large park. With clear, blue-green water, green banks, and a promenade, it gives Seestadt its unmistakable charm.
The lake is a popular meeting place – not just for Seestadt residents. In summer, many come to enjoy the cool water, relax, or play sports. Located directly at the subway station, it is easily accessible from everywhere. With the Seeterrassen quarter, hundreds of apartments with water views and gastronomy with outdoor seating are being created – ideal for an after-work drink right by the lake.
Parks in Seestadt
The centrally located Seepark covers 4.8 hectares. The lakeside promenade runs through the entire park and invites you to stroll, jog, and relax. With lots of greenery and natural planting, the park is reminiscent of the nearby Danube wetlands. Not only its location directly on the lake, but also many playful details such as “Fischers-Fritz nets,” a “seahorse herd,” and much more put water at the center. Whether sunbathing and swimming on weekends, morning yoga before work, or a chat with neighbors – Seepark is the perfect green spot.

The approximately 15,000 m² Hannah-Arendt-Park is located in the middle of the first completed part of Seestadt – Seestadt Süd – between residential area, shopping street, and education campus. Young Seestadt residents in particular find a place to play and have fun here. The green center also offers plenty of space to relax. For all those who love to move, there is a wide range of sports and play areas. Highlights include a running track and slacklines.

This 1.6-hectare park is located in the western part of Seestadt and stretches from Maria-Tusch-Straße to Janis-Joplin-Promenade. The blooming center of the park is a large flower meadow, surrounded by hills and hollows. Fruit trees, grassy hills, a water play area, play sculptures, large lawns, and plenty of space for movement bring a holiday feeling right to your doorstep in Yella-Hertzka-Park.

The highlight in Madame-d’Ora-Park is Vienna’s largest community garden, provided by the district management and Wien 3420 AG for Seestadt residents. In total, 93 beds are cultivated by Seestadt neighbors. Fruit, vegetables, and herbs made in Seestadt are grown and harvested here – not only good for the ecological footprint, but also bringing neighbors together.

With 30,000 m², Elinor-Ostrom-Park in the north of Seestadt impresses with an innovative overall concept: In addition to a variety of weather-protected play and leisure facilities along the subway line (3 ball courts, water and bike playground, swing boats, boulder blocks, street workout area, slackline area, parkour course, and fitness mile), the park stands out as an ecological showcase park with 170 new trees and 100 native shrubs, sustainable rainwater management, and a focus on biodiversity. Thanks to barrier-free and gender-sensitive planning, the park is also attractive for people with a wide range of needs, and four-legged friends have plenty of space to run in a 621 m² dog zone.

Green spaces off the beaten path
Green courtyards in Seestadt create sheltered oases for relaxation and neighborhood life. The aspern Terraces were created as generous open spaces even before construction of Seestadt began, connecting nature and urban life today. A special, quiet place is the Memorial Forest: It commemorates the Jewish citizens of Vienna murdered during the National Socialist era and invites visitors to pause and remember.

Shaping together
Participation has played a central role in Seestadt from the very beginning – for example, in the design of green spaces in Elinor-Ostrom-Park or in planning the Green String. On a total of 8,900 m² of urban gardening areas, such as in Madame-d’Ora-Park, residents can get involved themselves. The Seestadt Garden, associations like SeeStadtgrün and Kraut & Blüten, or the interim use project by Ackerhelden show how co-creative neighborhoods create communal open spaces that combine ecological benefits with social togetherness.
Green living room
Seestadt is based on a new planning principle: public space first, then buildings. The lake as the centerpiece and the surrounding parks, streets, and courtyards form the backbone of the district and shape mobility, commerce, culture, and leisure.
Always something happening
Whether sports, culture, cuisine, or simply relaxing by the water – Seestadt offers a wide range of leisure opportunities with short distances. Parks, venues, events, and green oases make it a vibrant place for every stage of life.
