The Austrian Sustainable Building Council (ÖGNB) honored outstanding projects for meeting ÖGNB quality criteria and thus particularly sustainable buildings at the Seestadt Technology Center on September 18. From the new municipal housing to the business park – eight of the 13 buildings are located in Seestadt. The awards once again highlight the high priority the district has placed on ecological standards and energy efficiency since the beginning of its development.

All projects awarded by the ÖGNB:
  • Gemeindebau NEU (Seestadt)
  • Gewerbehof Seestadt (Seestadt)
  • Seebogen:aktiv Nord (Seestadt)
  • Seebogen:aktiv Ost (Seestadt)
  • Seebogen:aktiv Süd (Seestadt)
  • Sirius Bauteil A (Seestadt)
  • Sirius Bauteil B2 (Seestadt)
  • Wohnbau H4A (Seestadt)
  • ASC Stützpunkt Gloggnitz (Gloggnitz)
  • ASC Stützpunkt Werndorf (Werndorf)
  • Personenbahnhof Lavanttal (St. Paul im Lavanttal)
  • STYR Headquarters (Mödling)
  • Taborama (Vienna – Leopoldstadt)

“The construction industry was responsible for 38 percent and thus more than a third of global CO2 emissions in 2019. This shows the great responsibility of the building sector and makes it clear how essential it is to build according to ecological and energy-efficient standards,” says Beate Lubitz-Prohaska, Chairwoman of the ÖGNB. “With the new edition of the ÖGNB criteria, the requirements for future-proof buildings are specified: The focus is on climate protection, climate change adaptation, circularity, and the EU taxonomy. We are particularly pleased that the buildings in Seestadt not only meet these standards but that the district also sets even stricter criteria for itself.”

Since the very first developer competition, all construction projects in Seestadt have been quality-assured with the ÖGNB assessment system, and since 2020, even stricter quality criteria for new buildings in Seestadt have been formulated with aspern klimafit.

“The holistic approach to sustainable construction, which has always started with the quality of the location, reflects the self-image of Seestadt’s development: Because energy-efficient and resource-saving buildings alone do not create a sustainable living environment. Comprehensive concepts for future-proof urban development are needed, ranging from open space design to mobility,” emphasizes Peter Hinterkörner, Head of Planning and Quality Management at Wien 3420.

Innovative sustainability standards with aspern klimafit 2.0

In addition to honoring sustainable buildings, the event also presented the further developed building standard aspern klimafit 2.0. The goal is to support buildings that meet the requirements for greenhouse gas-neutral living by 2040, thus contributing to limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees. “With aspern klimafit 2.0, we have defined seven quality criteria that minimize CO2 emissions during construction and operation. To create a holistic concept for sustainable living, grey energy and everyday mobility are also taken into account,” emphasizes Thomas Zelger, expert in Climate-fit Buildings and Districts, research focus on Renewable Energy Systems at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, who co-developed the new building standard.

aspern monitor NEU: Digital sustainability check for construction projects

The web tool aspern monitor NEU was also introduced, developed by pulswerk and ÖGNB on behalf of Wien 3420. Thanks to this advancement, planners and project developers can now easily check their construction projects against the criteria of ÖGNB, aspern klimafit, klimaaktiv, and the requirements of the EU taxonomy. Project applicants in Seestadt can see in real time, with just one data entry, which criteria have already been met. The benefits, in addition to reliable quality control: all documentation required for an EU taxonomy compliance declaration is collected and ready to be submitted to third parties for validation and approval.
