Around 30 Donaustadt clubs and sports providers presented themselves in Seestadt at the beginning of September, demonstrating just how diverse, inclusive, and popular the district’s offerings are. Interest was high: Over 1,000 guests took the opportunity to discover and try out a wide range of sports under expert guidance before concerts in the evening provided a lively finale. The sports festival was organized by the Seestadt association “Gutes aus der Seestadt” together with the development company Wien 3420 and Donaustadt Sport.
With perfect weather, Seestadt’s Elinor-Ostrom-Park proved to be the ideal location for the sports festival. On the sports fields under the U2 line, basketball, floorball, fistball, and handball teams invited everyone to join in. At surrounding stations, visitors could try gymnastics, ice hockey, archery, blowpipe shooting, or sports acrobatics, as well as orienteering, Japanese sword fighting, and various martial arts. Rowing on the lake was a big hit. Cycling fans of all ages got their money’s worth, the Seestadt boulderbar opened its climbing hall, and the VHS Kulturgarage became the meeting point for darts enthusiasts. Inclusive clubs welcomed everyone: the Austrian Disabled Sports Association invited guests to play boccia together, and MHSC, which focuses on people with intellectual and multiple disabilities, offered Viking golf. There was also dancing: from line dance to hip hop, there was something for all generations. All visitors could refresh themselves with water bottles donated by Wiener Wasser.
Radio Wien dance pro Chris Lachmuth interviewed prominent athletes in front of the Radio Wien dance bus: snowboard world champion Heidi Neururer, ORF football expert and former national team player Roman Mählich, multiple rowing world champion Christoph Schmölzer, long-time handball national team player Roland Schlinger, and goalkeeping legend Michael Konsel shared insights into their greatest moments and challenges.
District chairman Ernst Nevrivy was delighted: “The sports festival was a celebration for the whole family, where you could discover and try out many sports – a great success for a first-time event!”
“The fantastic atmosphere among the athletes and guests at the 1st Donaustadt Sports Festival, which we were able to host, makes me very happy. As a passionate cyclist and dedicated football fan, I have often experienced the sense of community and joy that sport brings. In Seestadt, we want to make this accessible to everyone. I would especially like to thank the association ‘Gutes aus der Seestadt’ for the excellent organization and the Donaustadt district for the trusting cooperation,” said Wien 3420 board member Robert Grüneis.
The 1st Donaustadt Sports Festival powered by aspern Seestadt concluded with a performance by Seestadt star Samira Dadashi, before the celebrations continued in the VHS Kulturgarage with the do:now.stadt festival and a concert by the Vienna Groove Orchestra together with stage and film stars Miriam Fussenegger and Susanne Gschwendtner.
The Donaustadt Sports Festival was supported, among others, by aspern Seestadt Einkaufsstraßen GmbH.
