New AHS location for the Seestadt

The new secondary school further expands the educational offering in the Seestadt. From the beginning of 2028, an AHS location with 36 core classes will be established between Sonnenallee and Seestadtstraße.

There will be 20 classes for lower secondary and 16 classes for upper secondary. In addition, there will be afternoon care for the lower grades, open learning zones, homebases, three sports halls, and generous outdoor areas. The Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG) and the Federal Ministry of Education are investing around 33 million euros in the new building.

The EU-wide architectural competition by BIG was won by the architectural office Franz&Sue. Their design, titled “Three Feelers into the Green”, features an elongated building that opens up to the open space with three garden-facing building sections.

This creates bright interiors, good orientation, and many direct connections to green spaces. The atrium forms the heart of the building and offers a view of the school garden. It is complemented by a central library, learning zones, terraces, and outdoor recreation areas.

The new secondary school is designed for a variety of learning formats. In lower secondary, classes are organized in clusters, while for upper secondary, a departmental system with homebases and subject areas is planned, each with open learning zones.

This creates spaces that are not only intended for traditional lessons, but can also be used for project work, independent learning, all-day care, and collaborative work.

Ecology is a top priority here. Planned features include green roofs with photovoltaic systems, a hybrid ventilation concept with mechanical base ventilation as well as supplementary window and night ventilation. The building will be constructed to the klimaaktiv Gold Standard. In addition, the design largely meets the quality criteria of aspern klimafit 2.0, focusing on locally supplied renewable energy for building operations.
