Exhibition on the Future Seecarré Quarter in aspern Seestadt

Results of architecture and developer competitions are presented

On the northwest shore of the aspern lake, the Seecarré is emerging as a new, forward-looking quarter in Seestadt. After the successful completion of architecture and developer competitions for the development of residential projects and the awarding process for the construction of a neighborhood garage, the winning projects have now been selected. From June 24 to 28, these, along with all other competition entries, can be viewed at the Kunstraum aspern Seestadt. Yesterday, the exhibition was officially opened together with Donaustadt district chairman Ernst Nevrivy, Wien 3420 board member Robert Grüneis, and deputy wohnfonds_wien managing director Dieter Groschopf. The developers and planning teams responsible for the winning projects presented their designs.
The Seecarré Takes Shape
“With the Seecarré, we are consistently continuing Vienna’s approach to social housing: affordable living space, top residential quality, excellent infrastructure, and a sustainable living environment go hand in hand here. The new residential quarter offers many people the affordable home they have long awaited. At the same time, a new chapter is being opened for the entire Seestadt, as the existing range of social infrastructure is thoughtfully expanded and complemented. With the newly applied standards of circular economy and climate-friendly construction, the Seecarré will also become a pioneering model quarter in terms of sustainability. International delegations are constantly convinced by the advantages of this future-oriented neighborhood development and thus learn from Vienna’s model of sustainable social housing for the future!” said Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for Housing Kathrin Gaál.
Seestadt is more than one-third developed. For the upcoming construction projects in the Seecarré quarter, the presentation of the future building projects marks a significant step. With the available architectural designs, the Seecarré is taking concrete shape.
A visible element has already been realized: the Seestadt Promenade was deliberately created early to give the trees a head start over the high-rise construction.
“The focus in developing the Seecarré is clearly on climate-friendly, future-oriented urban planning – this is also clearly reflected in the winning projects. They impressively demonstrate how resource-efficient, high-quality residential construction can succeed. As developers of Seestadt, it is also essential for us to consistently continue our chosen path of mixed-use residential quarters,” explains Robert Grüneis, board member of Wien 3420 aspern Development AG. “We have set ourselves ambitious goals for the Seecarré quarter: in addition to the comprehensive use of the Seestadt building standard aspern klimafit, we want to set new benchmarks in climate-friendly energy supply with a dedicated anergy network. Another characteristic feature will be the Green String – an attractive, traffic-calmed open space with particularly high quality of stay. In addition, tram line 25 will connect the quarter in the future.”
Planning Quality Through Competition Procedures
As part of the architecture competitions, residential projects were developed for a total of five building sites (F5, F6, F7, F12, F13). For two others (F9B, F10), a developer competition was announced by wohnfonds_wien together with Wien 3420 aspern Development AG. The result of the awarding process for the construction of a neighborhood collective garage (F9A) is also part of the exhibition.
“After the pioneer quarter and the ‘Am Seebogen’ quarter, we are already realizing high-quality subsidized housing in the third Seestadt quarter with the Seecarré. The presented winning projects impressively show how diverse and sustainable affordable living can be,” said Gregor Puscher, managing director of wohnfonds_wien, and Dieter Groschopf, deputy managing director.
