In the Media: Seestadt as an International Role Model for Climate-Resilient Urban Development
Showcase for Sustainable Urban Living
Whether it’s circular construction on site, CO₂-neutral energy supply, or affordable housing: Seestadt has already pioneered numerous successful strategies for climate-resilient urban development and is increasingly recognized internationally as a model for sustainable urban planning. Most recently, it was once again featured as a best-practice example in international publications.
In his article for the American sustainability magazine The Earth and I, Robert Selle highlights Seestadt as a showcase for sustainable urban living: 80% of all daily destinations are reachable within 15 minutes (15-minute city), fossil heating systems were excluded from the outset, and a new geothermal plant will supply around 20,000 households with emission-free district heating from 2028. Already today, 70% of energy consumption comes from renewable sources. Robert Selle particularly emphasizes the reuse of old excavated material from Seestadt, especially lake excavation, as well as recycled old airport runways. This has already saved over 8,000 tons of CO₂ and 7.6 million truck kilometers.
Vienna as an International Model City
The article by Julia Simon and Ryan Kellman, published on the website of the American broadcaster kbps, also presents Vienna as an international model city that is a trailblazer in social housing, actively addressing both the housing crisis and climate change. Here too, Seestadt is cited as a pioneer in climate resilience: with the sponge city principle, it is not only designed to be climate-resilient but is also well equipped to handle extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall. The authors make it clear: modern urban development and ambitious climate goals are not mutually exclusive, but can complement each other meaningfully.
