asperner See in Seestadt – for many residents, this cool gem is undoubtedly the highlight of their district. To ensure the lake remains a beautiful and safe local recreation area, we have compiled some helpful tips for you!
Everything you need to know RIGHT NOW about asperner See! Latest update: 07.2025

Do’s and Don’ts at a glance:

  • The wooden jetty is private property – access is permitted from 06:00 to 22:00 – entry is at your own risk
  • No water access and jumping prohibited at the north shore and on the jetty

The following applies to the entire shoreline including the park:

  • No vehicles are allowed at the lake – pedestrians only
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash – dogs are not permitted in the park (except in the dog zone at the lake)
  • Dispose of waste properly or simply take it with you
  • Emergency exits and lifebuoys save lives – please use only in emergencies!
  • Barbecuing and open fires (including shishas) are prohibited at the lake
  • Avoid noise and be considerate of others
  • Fishing and feeding wild animals is prohibited

Since the start of the 2025 bathing season, the use of the reinforced north shore and the jetty is permitted. However, according to the water law permit, swimming is prohibited there, meaning access to the water from here is not allowed. This is a measure by the authorities to protect water quality. The permit also includes a so-called “activation ban” on the northern shore. This area of the lake is designed as a local recreation zone. Emergency exits are installed there for safety reasons. Waste bins and toilets help keep the lake and shore clean. Additional infrastructure is not permitted.

How to swim safely:

Our lake is a natural swimming area. This means there is no non-swimmer area and no lifeguard supervision. Extra caution is therefore required when swimming—especially for inexperienced swimmers and non-swimmers.
The most important precaution is to be able to swim safely! Children must never be left unattended while swimming.

Potential hazards of natural swimming ponds include:
  • limited visibility depth
  • different temperature layers

Therefore, it is recommended that inexperienced swimmers and non-swimmers make use of the wide range of Vienna’s public swimming pools, where clearly marked non-swimmer areas, children's pools, and lifeguards are available.
In addition, a variety of swimming courses are offered here for participants of all ages and skill levels.

Another tip for safe swimming in the lake: Pay attention to the marked entry and exit points located at the two designated bathing bays.

Here you will also find information on the safe use of the bathing lake.

If an emergency situation does occur, it is important to follow these rules:

  • Memorize the accident location and inform others quickly
  • Call emergency services – fire brigade number 122 (!)
  • Attempt a rescue only if you feel capable – otherwise, get help (lifebuoys with guide numbers for
    emergency services)
  • After rescue, perform life-saving measures until emergency services arrive (defibrillator on site) – possibly specify/guide number for defibrillator station!

In principle: Watching over children and adults while swimming can be life-saving! You too can contribute to safe swimming in Seestadt.

Lifebuoys

As the name suggests, the rings are reserved for emergencies. They are there to rescue someone from the water. If you notice a lifebuoy is missing, you can report it via the Sag's Wien App.

Die Schlaue Kiste

The film “Die Schlaue Kiste – Asperner See” takes you on a creative journey of discovery through Seestadt. Created as part of a holiday film camp, children and young people, together with the Austrian Water Rescue and Wien 3420 aspern Development AG, produced an entertaining show all about asperner See. Be surprised by how young people present their perspective on the district through film.

FAQs

You will find WCs at the Tschau Tschau restaurant, at the end of Maria-Tusch-Straße, and at the subway station. During the summer season, an eco-toilet with a changing cabin is also available at the eastern entrance to the jetty (north shore).

As the evening progresses, things tend to get livelier and the noise level rises. However, the following also applies in Seestadt: quiet hours in residential areas from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Since this can sometimes be forgotten, there will again be a security service during the summer season, making several patrols around the lake daily between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to help reduce noise disturbances. They are authorized to check individuals and to ask people to leave the north shore between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
If you observe any criminal or inconsiderate behavior, please contact the police!

Yes, there is a lake access for dogs! In the lake park east of the subway station, you will find a spacious dog zone (see map) with water access for dogs. Otherwise, dogs are not allowed on the paths, meadows, banks, or in the water in the lake park. On the north side, dogs may be walked on a leash, but they are not allowed in the water there either. You can find more dog zones in the interactive district map (Elenor-Ostrom-Park, Madame d'Ora-Park, Johann Kutschera Gasse bus stop).

Signage throughout the area indicates that fishing and feeding fish and waterfowl are not permitted. This is important not only to maintain water quality. Above all, the “food” harms the animals’ stomachs.

Wien 3420 arranges for waste collection and bin emptying several times a week in the north. In the south of the lake (lake park), the City of Vienna is responsible for cleaning and regularly emptying the rubbish bins.

Of course, this is a great service – nevertheless, we encourage you to take personal responsibility and show solidarity with your fellow residents. Help shape Seestadt together so that everyone feels at home here.
