Street Art Meets Urban Development

Together with Member of Parliament Anderle, aspern Seestadt presented a new artwork on the northern shore of the lake
With a vibrant mural – a so-called mural – Seestadt sets another artistic highlight in public space. Along the northern lakeside promenade, the large-scale work “Flux” was created in summer, curated and organized by the Vienna street art agency muralia. Together with Patricia Anderle, City Councillor and Member of the Vienna State Parliament, Christian Stromberger, District Councillor and Chair of the Donaustadt Culture Commission, Sabine Müller, Executive Board Member of Wien 3420, and the artist collective, it was ceremoniously unveiled.
Veronica Kaup-Hasler, City Councillor for Culture and Science of the City of Vienna, is impressed by the mural: “Art in public spaces enriches the urban environment, creates encounters, and inspires reflection. It brings people together, creates identity, and allows us to experience the city from new perspectives. Especially in a young, developing environment like Seestadt, art is an important element for identity and cohesion.”
In her welcome address, Member of Parliament Patricia Anderle also emphasized: “Projects like this show how lively and diverse urban space can be designed. I am very pleased that street art is once again so prominently visible in Seestadt. This form of art is an expression of an open, creative urban culture and shapes the atmosphere of a place in a very special way – it sets impulses, sometimes deliberately provokes, and invites us to take a closer look.”
The mural covers around 260 m² and was realized by the artists Linda Steiner, Käthe Löffelmann, and Axel Schindler. During a joint walk along the promenade, they provided insights into the creation of the work:
“The mural unites our different styles and thrives on the dynamics of the element water, which was taken up as a connecting motif – sometimes calm, sometimes full of energy. Bold colors, flowing shapes, reflections, references to nature, and abstract, sometimes humorous elements stand for diversity, change, and openness – values we perceive in Seestadt. The design is intended to invite people to discover the mural from different perspectives: while passing by, lingering, or in active exchange.”
The mural was commissioned by the Seestadt development company Wien 3420 aspern Development AG. Executive Board Member Sabine Müller emphasizes: “Seestadt sees itself as a place where participation and community are not only planned but actively lived. Art in public space has therefore always had a high priority. It should be accessible to everyone, low-threshold and barrier-free. I am all the more pleased that we have created another place here where art can be experienced directly and by everyone.”
After the opening, visitors had the opportunity to get creative themselves: At the open workshop “Come by & paint”, led by Nadine Schuller aka nani chula from the Calle Libre team, visitors – especially children and young people – created part of another artwork together with the artists.
