Action Day "Safe Swimming" in Seestadt

To kick off the swimming season, a special safety campaign by the Helpers of Vienna took place today at aspern Lake. The "Safe Swimming" action day marks the start of an information campaign for schools, kindergartens, and institutions involved in child and youth work. Staff from various organizations in Seestadt and the surrounding area, as well as five Seestadt middle school classes, took part. A smart defibrillator from the Puls association, now available directly on the lakeshore, was also presented.
Vienna, 06.06.2023 – In Donaustadt, many natural swimming spots invite you to enjoy leisure time by the water. However, special caution is required at wild swimming areas without lifeguards. This year, Seestadt offers six lifebuoys managed by Vienna’s water administration and, for the first time, a smart defibrillator with a combined lifebuoy to provide extra help in emergencies. To promote responsible behavior in and around the water, the "Safe Swimming" action day was held on June 6 at aspern Lake.
The information campaign launched with this event is aimed especially at caregivers and, as important multipliers, at staff working in child and youth services. On the action day, five school classes from the Liselotte-Hansen Schmidt education campus learned about water safety at several quiz and activity stations. The program also included an equipment showcase and a rescue diver demonstration. “We are blessed with many popular wild swimming spots in Donaustadt. For unrestricted swimming fun, it’s especially important to me that those seeking relaxation are always aware of how important safe swimming, caution, and consideration for others are,” explained Ernst Nevrivy, district head of Donaustadt, who attended the event together with city councilor and NEOS swimming spokesperson Markus Ornig, chief physician of Vienna’s professional rescue service Mario Krammel, and Wolfgang Kastel, head of the Helpers of Vienna.
Markus Ornig, city councilor and NEOS swimming spokesperson, is also enthusiastic about the campaign: “To prevent accidents, it’s necessary to recognize dangers early and know how to help in an emergency. Above all, children should learn to swim as early as possible. That’s why the City of Vienna offers numerous swimming courses for children and young people. Supervised pools are especially important for this. As part of the current Vienna swimming pool initiative, an indoor pool is also planned to open in Seestadt by 2030.”
Seestadt gets its first defibrillator cabinet with automated emergency call system – smart “Wiener Schrank” with emergency call update
As part of the action day, the smart “Wiener Schrank” with a GPS-equipped defibrillator was also presented on the lakeshore. For the first time, the “Wiener Schrank” has sensorically integrated the existing lifebuoy, which intelligently sends a targeted alert via an automated emergency call system. When the lifebuoy or defibrillator is removed, emergency services are automatically notified and the rescue chain is set in motion. The goal is to generally reduce rescue times in the event of accidents. The association Puls has chosen Seestadt as the first location for this innovative and life-saving technology – made possible by donations. The latest defibrillator cabinet model with integrated lifebuoy can be found right at the Pop-up Bistro Tschau Tschau by the lake.
