EIA

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) – A seal of quality for Vienna’s new urban centre

A responsible approach to the environment is a top priority for the project as a whole. End of March 2009 the applications, project documentation and environmental impact statements (EIS), which are the core elements of the environmental impact assessments (EIA), have been submitted by the project developers to the government of the Federal Province of Vienna as the competent authority. The EIA for the urbanistic project was submitted by Wien 3420 Aspern Development AG, while the EIA for road construction is submitted by Municipal Department 28 (MA 28) – Road Management and Construction. The permit for the first construction phase was granted in June 2010. To download the German version of the permit klick here!

It is the purpose of the EIA to employ state-of-the-art scientific methods in order to assess potential environmental consequences of the project already before its implementation, thereby avoiding negative effects through preventive measures.

The assessment covers several categories of protected subjects and objects: humans, animals, plants and their habitats, soil, water, air and climate, the landscape as well as cultural and material assets.
The core element of the EIA, the “environmental impact statement” (EIS) describes and assesses all forms of impact a project is likely to have and defines a full range of measures to be taken to prevent undesirable consequences.
